Grammar: adjective endings with colors

As adjectives, color words follow the general Dutch -e rule:

  • De-words (sing.): add -e — de zwarte jas, de rode jurk.
  • Het-words (sing.) + definite or any plural: add -e — het blauwe T-shirt, de groene huizen.
  • Het-words (sing.) + indefinite: no -e — een rood huis, een wit hemd.

Fixed forms: Some colors behave like nouns too: het blauw (the color blue), het rood. In that case they take het.

Ik draag een groen jasje, maar de jas is donkerblauw. — I’m wearing a green short jacket, but the coat is dark blue.
