Examples of each of the prepositions in Dutch:
- aan (to, on, at):
- Hij staat aan de deur. (He is standing at the door.)
- Ze heeft een brief aan jou geschreven. (She wrote a letter to you.)
- achter (behind, after):
- De kat zit achter de bank. (The cat is behind the sofa.)
- Kom achter me aan! (Come after me!)
- afgezien van (apart from, except for):
- Afgezien van het slechte weer, hebben we een geweldige tijd gehad. (Apart from the bad weather, we had a great time.)
- aldus (according to):
- Aldus mijn moeder is dit de beste taart. (According to my mother, this is the best cake.)
- als (as):
- Hij gedraagt zich als een echte heer. (He behaves as a true gentleman.)
- Als je wilt, kun je meedoen. (If you want, you can join.)
- behalve (except for):
- Iedereen was aanwezig, behalve Peter. (Everyone was present except for Peter.)
- beneden (beneath, under):
- De sleutels liggen beneden op tafel. (The keys are under the table downstairs.)
- bij (at, by, toward, near):
- Ik woon bij het park. (I live near the park.)
- Zij staat bij de deur. (She is standing by the door.)
- binnen (within, inside):
- Kom binnen en maak het je gemakkelijk. (Come inside and make yourself comfortable.)
- De verrassing is binnen de doos. (The surprise is inside the box.)
- boven (above, over):
- De vogels vliegen boven ons hoofd. (The birds are flying above our heads.)
- Het schilderij hangt boven de bank. (The painting is over the sofa.)
- bovenop (on top of):
- De sleutels liggen bovenop de tafel. (The keys are on top of the table.)
- buiten (out of, beyond):
- Het is koud buiten. (It’s cold outside.)
- We gaan buiten de stad. (We’re going beyond the city.)
- dankzij (thanks to):
- We hebben gewonnen dankzij jouw inzet. (We won thanks to your effort.)
- door (through, by):
- Ze kwam door de voordeur binnen. (She came in through the front door.)
- Dit boek is geschreven door Mark Twain. (This book is written by Mark Twain.)
- gedurende (during):
- Gedurende de zomer gaan we vaak naar het strand. (During the summer, we often go to the beach.)
- in (in, into, within):
- Hij stapte in de auto. (He got into the car.)
- De sleutel ligt in de lade. (The key is in the drawer.)
- jegens (to, towards):
- Hij gedroeg zich respectvol jegens zijn ouders. (He behaved respectfully towards his parents.)
- krachtens (by virtue of):
- Krachtens de wet moet je belasting betalen. (By virtue of the law, you have to pay taxes.)
- langs (along, past):
- We wandelden langs het kanaal. (We walked along the canal.)
- De trein reed langs het station. (The train passed the station.)
- met (/mee) (with):
- Ik ga met mijn vrienden naar de film. (I’m going to the movies with my friends.)
- na (after):
- We gaan eten na de vergadering. (We’ll eat after the meeting.)
- naar (to, on, at):
- Ik ga naar de winkel. (I’m going to the store.)
- Ze kijkt naar de sterren. (She’s looking at the stars.)
- naartoe (to, on, at):
- Waar gaan jullie naartoe? (Where are you going to?)
- We gaan naartoe om te picknicken. (We’re going to have a picnic.)
- naast (next):
- Ons huis staat naast het park. (Our house is next to the park.)
- nabij (by, at, beside):
- Het café is nabij het treinstation. (The cafe is by the train station.)
- namens (on behalf of):
- Ik spreek namens het hele team. (I’m speaking on behalf of the entire team.)
- niettegenstaande (in spite of):
- Niettegenstaande de regen gingen we wandelen. (In spite of the rain, we went for a walk.)
- om (around, for, at):
- We lopen om het meer. (We walk around the lake.)
- Ik kom om 7 uur. (I’ll come at 7 o’clock.)
- ondanks (in spite of):
- Hij lachte, ondanks zijn verdriet. (He laughed in spite of his sorrow.)
- onder (under):
- De kat zit onder de tafel. (The cat is under the table.)
- ongeacht (regardless of):
- Ongeacht je leeftijd kun je leren. (Regardless of your age, you can learn.)
- op (on):
- Het boek ligt op de tafel. (The book is on the table.)
- over (over, via, about):
- Hij sprak over zijn reis naar Parijs. (He talked about his trip to Paris.)
- Ze stak over de rivier via de brug. (She crossed the river over the bridge.)
- per (by, per):
- De pakketten worden per post verzonden. (The packages are sent by mail.)
- qua (as, as far as … is concerned):
- Qua prijs is dit een goede deal. (As far as price is concerned, this is a good deal.)
- rond (around, concerning):
- We wandelen rond het meer. (We walk around the lake.)
- Rond dit onderwerp hebben we veel discussies gehad. (We’ve had many discussions concerning this topic.)
- rondom (around):
- Er staan bomen rondom het huis. (There are trees around the house.)
- sedert (since, for):
- Ik woon hier sedert 2010. (I’ve been living here since 2010.)
- sinds (since, for):
- Hij is hier sinds gisteren. (He’s been here since yesterday.)
- te (at, in):
- We ontmoeten elkaar te 10 uur. (We’ll meet at 10 o’clock.)
- tegen (against, to):
- Hij is tegen het voorstel. (He’s against the proposal.)
- Ze leunde tegen de muur. (She leaned against the wall.)
- tegenover (across, opposite):
- Het restaurant is tegenover het park. (The restaurant is across from the park.)
- tijdens (during):
- Tijdens de vergadering moet je stil zijn. (You must be quiet during the meeting.)
- tot (until, to, as far as):
- We wachten tot middernacht. (We’re waiting until midnight.)
- Tot zover kan ik je helpen. (I can help you as far as that.)
- tussen ((in) between, among):
- Ze zat tussen haar vrienden. (She was sitting among her friends.)
- Het boek lag tussen de andere boeken. (The book was (in) between the other books.)
- uit (out, out of, from):
- Hij stapte uit de auto. (He got out of the car.)
- Het is gemaakt uit hout. (It’s made of wood.)
- van (of, from):
- De sleutel van het huis. (The key to the house.)
- Dit boek is van mij. (This book is mine.)
- vanaf (from):
- We vertrekken vanaf het station. (We’re leaving from the station.)
- vanwege (because of, on account of):
- We moeten annuleren vanwege het slechte weer. (We have to cancel because of the bad weather.)
- via (via):
- We kunnen de informatie via de website verkrijgen. (We can get the information via the website.)
- volgens (according to, in …’s opinion):
- Volgens de leraar is dat het juiste antwoord. (According to the teacher, that’s the correct answer.)
- voor (for, before, in front of):
- Ik heb een cadeau voor je. (I have a gift for you.)
- Ze stond voor het huis te wachten. (She was waiting in front of the house.)
- voorbij (past, beyond):
- We liepen voorbij het park. (We walked past the park.)
- wegens (because of):
- Het evenement is geannuleerd wegens de regen. (The event is canceled because of the rain.)
- zonder (without):
- Ze ging weg zonder iets te zeggen. (She left without saying anything.)
